Great layout, very tough. The problem I had with the course was the conditions. Crabgrass in the fairways, rocks in the sand traps, greens need to roll better. They have a wonderful course, they just need to condition it. Could be the best course on the south side! If I didn_t like the layout I probably give it an average rating. |

Fun course - play from the tips for a real adventure. Conditions are OK. Greens were fast and rolled true, fairways just OK. Large trees everywhere - keep it straight to avoid trouble. Some long and challenging par 5_s. Pace was good, enjoyable round. |

yardage on this course is very poorly marked. tee boxes are in horrible shape and there is no picture of the hole on the tee. basically you are shooting blind if you have not played this course before. gps is not operational on this course. it would be nice to know how far lakes and bunkers are from the tee box. greens had many divot marks and were in generally poor condition. i played on a dry windy day and every step i took left a foot print in these soggy, mushy greens. on top of that the staff was very rude and unprofessional. i will never play this course again and would not recommend this course to my friends |

On this side of town, we warm up for a few weeks on less challengung tracks. Then we take a deep breath and head over to Big Run. Tough, beautiful and slightly unfair in spots (11th green is impossible). Par 3 7th green can get a bit chewed up (does anyone repair ball marks anymore?). If you par #9 I think they engrave your name on a placque. Awfully long for high handicappers, throw in some spectacular hills and slick greens...play conservatively and have a great time. I_ve taken single digit handicaps out here and we_ve closed the bar talking about the round. You love it or hate it, no one falls in between. |

This course is challenging but unfair. No. 9 is a perfect example, tight tree lined 600 yard par-five uphill with a three teared green. This course would be much more fair and fun to play if it was in better shape. I_m a relatively long hitter and even I don_t find this course to be enjoyable. |

Nothing in this region compares with this course in terms of layout, design, challenging holes and value. Half the price of Dubs and a much more enjoyable golf course to play. Not for whiners, or those who can't putt. Used as a site for U.S. Open qualifying, and for good reason. This course will have you saying " I can't believe I have not heard about this course before. See the wizard and get a heart and some courage before making the trek. If you par 9, , 11, 12, 13 and 18, give yourself a well deserved hoo rah. |

PLEASE NOTE: This course is for those who play long, all the clubs in the bag if you will. I have played this course for more than 20 years and the changes to 3,4 and 13 are amoung the best in Chicago. Scoring @ BR comes only after playing here a few times. Knowing the course is part of golf, and is very important here!!! |

I love this course - it is beautiful and very challenging! Go during the week and it is wide open and good value (love the GPS in cart). This course is not for the insecure- you will NOT shoot your best score here! |

One word. Ridiculous. Even if you keep it straight and put it on the fairway, there are several holes where you are still not rewarded. I had to play a punch and run on a few different occasions from the middle of the fairway due to large (and overgrown) trees guarding one or more sides of the green. I do not mind a tough course but I do not appreciate it when good shots are not rewarded. I will never golf here again. |

if you putt from the right side on hole #7 you will need a square golf ball |

Nice course but are you kidding me with those greens? They're like table tops! |
Golfer: Mike Brown Date: 2003-04-28 Rating: ![]() |
I have played this course 3 times and my handicap is in the low single digits. With my ball sitting 15 feet from slightly above the hole pin high the ball continued to roll off the FRONT of the green. I found it rather disconcerting that you can not leave any putt on the 2 level greens if you are above the hole. So...that is the breaks but becomes slightly unfair. |

This course has probably the two greatest holesin Chicago, 12 and 13. If you want to play a great course with the best staff of people in Chicago, play Big Run. |

Wow. Just an unbelievable course. I'm usually around par on most Chicago courses. This one humbled me to 5 over. I'm known in these parts as a big hitter and it took everything I had to reach the par 5's in 2. Some questionable tree placements though. |

Pretty course, average conditioning, some of the most stupidly designed holes in Chicago area. This course appeals to people who are not serious about golf as a sport, but view it as a walk in a nice looking senic park. |

Tough course if you cannot hit it straight. Even that doesn't mean a thing occasionally. One of the more challenging courses in Chicagoland or anywhere for that matter. Without a doubt worth the cost for the total experience. Beautiful layout. The only drawback is that some of the tee boxes are showing some signs of fungus. Maybe some tree removal would help. I can't wait to play it again. |

I love this course. It a course where making pars are a real challenge on many holes. I always play from the blues but the white tees here, kicked my ass!!! |
Golfer: Skeeter Date: 2002-09-01 Rating: ![]() |
Bring your driver and hit it well because your irons just won't cut it. If you slice or hook the ball be prepared to play a punch shot back into the fairway, and remember to bring a camera you will be amazed. |

This is a great course, it always amazes me the difficulty that was designed into some of the older courses. This is a classic, one you will talk about to your friends and bring your enemies to, you don't have a chance the first time you play this one! |

Better bring your a-game, and your patience. This is a beautiful, mature course with some stunning views from the very hilly landscape. If you go in the fall its worth the price for this reason alone. GPS on carts are great, you can order your lunch at the tee on 9 and have it waiting for you at the turn. Great course, long and challenging. |
Golfer: Dan Date: 2003-02-01 Rating: ![]() |
This is a challenging, LONG course with 2 Par 5s around 600 yds. And most of the Par 4s are over 400 yds. Extremely scenic, hill course with many old trees and ponds. Play in the Fall! |

This course is just as tough as Dubs. A bargain of a price for a course of this level. |
Golfer: Anonymous Duffer Date: 2003-02-01 Rating: ![]() |
This is a great course. The layout is original and creative. No two holes are exactly alike. Some holes are very hard and others give you opportunities to score. Very well maintained and run. |
Golfer: Rex Date: 2003-02-01 Rating: ![]() |
Holy %#&*%#%!!!! Looking for punishment, this is the place. Well maintained, scenic, challenging, worth every penny. Play from the tips at your own risk, pros would think it is too difficult to score on. |
Big Run Golf Club Addtional Information & History
Big Run Golf Club: Designed by C.H. Muelenford/Sneed, Big Run Golf Club opened in 1930. Five lakes, Long Run Creek and hundreds of mature oak trees throughout this 18-hole course will test even the most seasoned golfer’s shot-making abilities. Eight of the holes bring water into play and the course is heavily bunkered. Big Run is as enjoyable as it is challenging. The terrific scenery, combined with the reshaping of the course that’s gone on for several years, complement the diverse needs of today’s golfer. Back in 1979, Didier Co. made changes to four of the greens and tee number 5. Killian & Nugent, Inc. handled changes to Greens 12 and 16, plus tees 16 and 17 between 1982 and 1983. From 1986 – 2004, Dick Nugent Associates architected improvements to many more of the greens and tees, added Ladies’ Tees on all holes and constructed a lake. If you haven’t played Big Run in awhile, you may not even recognize it! Group and private lessons are available at the facility. Big Run Golf Club offers a special event venue throughout the year.
